2003 Event Recap

If you missed the OWU Friends Fund Reunion Weekend in September of ’03 you missed a lot. The event, honoring and celebrating the lives of Ted Luckett ’84 and Doug Cherry ’85 brought together over 160 alums raising thousands of dollars for scholarships in Ted and Doug’s names.

Alumni from as far away as Colorado and London gathered at the IBM Learning Center in Armonk, New York, where we proved once again that although years have passed, it still seems like yesterday that we were all back in Delaware kicking back with friends and making memories.

The weekend was kicked off with a golf tournament where Bill Taylor ’84, Bob MacDonald, ’86 and Doug Dittrick ’55 won the scramble event. The cookout that night continued into the wee hours where spirited games of ping pong were played while old friends caught up on each others lives.

A mixed doubles tennis tournament was played the next day until rain cancelled but the final four, Debbie Rogers Truesdale ’84, Tim Hague ’84, Drew Green ’86 and Lissen Thompson Tutrone ’85 were all crowned champions.

That night, during the cocktail hour bids were placed on silent auction items kicking off Saturday night’s festivities. Before dinner all gathered to hear toasts made for Ted and Doug by their close friends Tom Raymond ’84, Peter Day ’85, Rick Happy ’85 and Burns Patterson, brother of Sarah Patterson Cherry ’85.

Even a fire drill didn’t dampen the spirits of those who dined, danced and caught up with friends, sorority sisters and fraternity brothers whom, in some cases, hadn’t seen each other in over two decades.

After a highly spirited live auction under the direction of Jonathan Woods ’85, Rocco Donnino ’84 sang a rocking version of “Peace, Love and Understanding” with the awesome band Karlus Trapp & Magumbo.

At brunch the next morning laughter was heard as stories from the weekend were recounted, creating memories to add to the twenty plus worth already stored away.

September Weekend honoring Doug Cherry and Ted Luckett
September 21-22, 2002

A fabulous weekend celebration reunited OWU alumni, friends and family of Ted and Doug in September. We honored them with their families and had lots of FUN with wonderful "old" friends. The OWU communities' hard work and commitment was demonstrated when the huge check was presented to OWU for the Luckett and Cherry Scholarships in 2002. Sarah and Lisa will select recipients from scholarship candidates who share Doug and Ted's attitudes and interests.

Tom Courtice, president, of Ohio Wesleyan brought everyone to their feet as he announced that each of Ted and Doug's children will receive a full scholarship to Ohio Wesleyan.

The evening was a roller coaster of laughter and tears, but Rocky Donnino brought the house down when he confessed we'd accomplish quite a lot for "C-students with good social skills". It became a mantra for the weekend. We may be average scholars, but this weekend proved we aren't average friends or party-ers.

Jon Woods served as the QVC-style "huckster extraordinaire", taking advantage of the flowing booze to garner higher and higher bids for each auction item. By then, the program had dissolved into crazed dancing and ended up with an SAE-east party that went until the wee hours.
